I am a Craft Brewer

This is a video that was shown at last week’s Craft Brewers Conference in Boston. It is pretty powerful. It might make you stand up and say, “HELL YES!” It might bring a little tear to your eye (not me, I mean, I’m just saying…)

“I Am A Craft Brewer” is a collaborative video representing the camaraderie, character and integrity of the American Craft Brewing movement. Created by Greg Koch, CEO of the Stone Brewing Co. and Chris & Jared of Redtail Media…and more than 35 amazing craft brewers from all over the country. The video was shown to a packed audience of 1700 craft brewers and industry members at the 2009 Craft Brewers Conference as an introduction to Greg’s Keynote Speech entitled “Be Remarkable: Collaboration Ethics Camaraderie Passion.” As is tradition for the CBC Keynote, a toast to the audience was offered. This time, the beers offered for the toast were all collaboratively brewed craft beers including Isabella Proximus, Collaboration Not Litigation, AleSmith/Mikkeller/Stone Belgian Style Triple, Jolly Pumpkin/Nøgne-Ø/Stone Special Holiday Ale, and 2009 Symposium Ale “Audacity of Hops.”

As regular readers of the blog know, we pretty much focus on Washington beers. On occasion, we talk about interesting beer-related things going on in Washington even if they don’t have anything to do with Washington beer. For example, Ninkasi Brewing (Eugene, OR) is coming to town to host a brewers night that is interesting on two levels. First, it’s at a place that does not usually host brewers nights. Second, it’s not just a typical “short speech by the brewer and then give away some swag” event.

Here are the details :

Thursday April 16th. 9:00 pm
The Skylark Cafe & Club
Samurai Artist Productions & Ninkasi Brewing present an evening of music and brews featuring three local bands:
The Toy Soldiers
Hair Envelope
Rebels & Scientists

Jamie Floyd of Ninkasi will be on hand to talk about his beers with all of the currently available Ninkasi beers on tap. Perhaps even something special. This event is FREE so come on down and welcome Jamie and enjoy some tasty brews and live music.

In July 2008, Elliott Bay Brewhouse and Pub in Burien became King County’s first brewery to gain organic certification. On February 2, 2009, Elliott Bay Brewery and Pub in West Seattle became the second brewery in King County to be awarded organic certification by the WSDA (as an agent of the FDA). Elliott Bay has been brewing with organic grain for a number of years but recently decided to seek certification for their year-round house beers and a handful of their seasonal recipes. To determine which of the current draught selections are certified organic, West Seattle pubsters should look to the board above the bar or to the tap handles for the USDA label. You can also just ask your dedicated and friendly server. Last summer the Seattle Times published a nice article about Elliott Bay going organic – click here to read it.

WBB asks: Who is Seattle Beer Week?

Here’s an early heads-up about a new beer event, or I should say a WEEK of beer events, coming this May.  A few beer-loving individuals are organizing “Seattle Beer Week,” May 7-17th, 2009. Modeled after the successful San Francisco Beer Week and Philadelphia Beer Week, Seattle Beer Week will present a series of events involving great beer at local establishments.

The Web site gives no hint of who is behind this brilliant idea, but they aren’t hiding their identity on purpose, they’ve just been so busy planning the event that they haven’t had time for an “About Us” page.  Beer Week organizer Ian Roberts tells us, “We are simply four guys who have been working in the greater Seattle Beer Community that wanted to bring this city of beer together and celebrate our scene. The crew Consists of Mike Baker, formerly of Baron Brewing now with Pacific Beverage, Matt Younts, beer specialist for Click Distributing, Nat Pellman formerly the manager of Big Time Brewing now working with myself over at Brouwer’s Cafe, which I’ve been managing for the past three years.”

The Beer Week is in its formative stages, and many more events will be added between now and May. www.SeattleBeerWeek.com will be updated frequently as more details are confirmed. Here are some of the events scheduled so far:
